We do live in a global economy with devices manufactured all over the world which is ultimately a better world to live in with that type of competition... BUT don't forget that there can be hidden costs to purchase inexpensive overseas weighing solutions when routine maintenance tasks need to be performed.
In this example a customer here in Orlando, Florida had an issue where their scale mounting bolt loosened and eventually tore through the potting compound on the bottom of their single point loadcells and damaged the fine wires leading to the strain gauges on the cell itself. So their maintenance staff ordered a replacement load cell in and installed it not knowing that load cells are an analog sensor and cannot be swapped the same way as a digital sensor.
This lead to them adjusting the settings on their expanding foam process to the point where block densities were hard to keep in specification. We were called in to adjust this device...
Of course prior to sending a technician we always ask for make and model of the device and warned the customer to contact the manufacturer and get the calibration procedures prior to being onsite. They tried many times over several weeks and finally had to schedule the repair when an engineer from overseas would be onsite helping with other equipment to provide us with the calibration procedure.
While working with their engineer we had found that the new load sensor that was ordered in had the signal wires swapped so that the cell was reading negatively when weight was applied. So we had to re-solder the connections with glue lined heat shrink since the device did not have standard terminal blocks but was potted through on the board without any real way to properly service the device.
Once their engineer was able to translate the manufacturers documentation and provide the correct calibration procedure we were able to apply NIST certified test weights and re-calibrate the device.
This whole process took multiple trips onsite, scheduling challenges and requests with their overseas contacts... Had the customer simply utilized a device manufactured or at least supported here in the US with instructions in English this would have been a quick and easy service call handled in less than a couple of hours at a quarter of the cost.
